SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- A stretch of westbound I-696 will completely close this weekend in Oakland County, as part of a longer-term freeway rebuilding project.
The Michigan Department of Transportation has announced that all lanes of westbound I-696 from Telegraph Road (US-24) to I-275, will be closed beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, through 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 24.
The detour for the closure will be westbound I-696 to southbound Telegraph Rd. to westbound M-102 (8 Mile Road) to westbound M-5, back on to westbound I-696.
This closure is part of Phase One of a major reconstruction of I-696, which MDOT says will include "rebuilding the roadway from the base up" — including storm sewer replacement work and rebuilding ramps at Orchard Lake Rd., American Drive, Franklin Rd., Northwestern Highway and Telegraph Rd.
After 5 a.m. Monday, lane closures for this work will continue with only two lanes open along westbound I-696 from Evergreen Rd. to I-275, through late December.
