WESTLAND (WWJ) -- It’s the city of Westland vs. Mosquitoes.

In response to wet weather this summer in metro Detroit, Westland is being proactive in its fight against the insect through a comprehensive mosquito abatement program.

The program uses pesticides to eliminate mosquito larvae in standing water before it hatches to curb the recent influx of the biting bug.

Beginning next week, The Department of Public Service will physically insert Natural G30 WSP Spinosad Briquettes to 7,300 catch basins throughout the Westland community, that may pose as a potential mosquito breeding ground.

The remainder of the pesticides will be available to Homeowners Associations, as well as residents with ponds and other potential hot spots.

“The City of Westland is committed to keeping our residents healthy and safe,” Mayor William R. Wild said in a statement. “With the recent influx of rain in our community, taking action against mosquitos will help each resident enjoy Michigan’s summers and the amenities offered by our city.”

Having received approval from The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), Public Service workers will be treating the catch basins and ditches throughout the city, and residents are being assured that they can expect no harm to surface water quality.
