(WWJ) – Gas prices in Michigan hit an average of $4.26 on Wednesday, tying a record-high set back in 2011.
While Metro Detroiters continue to deal with the rising costs at the pump, one expert says there are some things that drivers can do to help lower prices.
That includes cutting unnecessary trips and carpooling, if you can, according to GasBuddy’s Patrick DeHaan.
“Anything to just save even a drip here and a drip there,” DeHaan told WWJ.
“Basically, if every American took small steps, we could reduce demand significantly and shorten the time frame that we see and experience these prices.”

DeHaan noted gas prices could “eventually go back down much faster” if all Americans pitch in, in the midst of inflation and other soaring prices across the country..
Global oil prices appeared to be leveling off on Wednesday, DeHaan said. Prices could continue to climb a little higher, but he doesn’t expect the dreaded $5 per gallon mark to be on the horizon any time soon.
Other tips for making your gas tank last longer include keeping your tank at half-full or more, obeying the speed limit, checking tire pressure and more.
Even some shoppers are changing their car buying strategies, in an attempt to keep more money in their pockets.
James Cagle, the General Manager of Sellers Subaru in Macomb, told WWJ’s Ryan Marshall they’ve seen an uptick in customers that want more long-lasting vehicles.
One woman said she drives more than 100 miles a day for her job as a home care nurse. She was buying a Subaru Outback from Sellers because it gets much better gas mileage than her old vehicle.
“The gas mileage and the longevity of it – and the safety” were the biggest selling points for Candace Stevenson, who’s one of just many Metro Detroiters looking to loosen the squeeze on their wallets.
State lawmakers are also doing their part to try and bring gas prices back down. Republicans on Wednesday were expected to call for a vote on legislation that would suspend the state gas tax of 27 cents a gallon from the start of April through the month of September.
