DETROIT (WWJ) – Friday is an unofficial holiday in Detroit -- Opening Day for the Tigers.

Rain or shine, Tigers fans never let the weather dampen the mood. But what can fans expect on Friday? AccuWeather Meteorologist Brian Thompson has the answers on this week's Weather Wednesday.

WWJ’s Tony Ortiz noted it’s “always cold” on Opening Day in Detroit – it “never fails.” But it looks like there will be a “mixed bag” when it comes to Friday.

Thompson says temperatures are only expected to reach the mid-to-upper 40s on Friday, with some pop-up showers and possibly even some wet snowflakes mixed in.

Don't worry too much about that snow, Tigers fans -- it won't be anything like last year's Opening Day when Miguel Cabrera hit a home run in a virtual snow globe in his first at-bat of the year.

Thompson says there will be an upper level low on Friday, meaning there’s a cool pocket of air aloft, which adds instability to the atmosphere.

“Whenever the sun tries to come out on days like that – we call it ‘self-destruct sunshine’ – the sun just fades, the clouds build up almost as soon as the sun comes out, and then you get these pop-up showers,” Thompson said.

He doesn’t believe Friday’s rain will be strong enough to postpone the game, but he doesn’t rule out the possibility of a rain delay or two due to a “brief heavier shower that comes on through.”

And if Friday’s game does get postponed, Thompson says, Saturday doesn’t look much better for fans. At least not in terms of the temperature, as it’s expected to be even colder, though the chance of rain is slightly lower.

Ortiz says there are two words that would fix Detroit’s seemingly annual Opening Day weather woes – “domed stadium.”
