(WWJ) – A former U.S. Marine who had been held in a Russian prison on accusations of being a spy has been released, as the Americans and Russians coordinated a so-called “prisoner swap” on Wednesday.

But it wasn’t Paul Whelan, of Novi, Mich., who was arrested in Moscow in December 2018 and in the summer of 2020 convicted of espionage and sentenced to 16 years in a labor camp. Russian officials have never detailed what exactly Whelan did that led to the espionage accusations.

While Whelan has maintained his innocence throughout his detention, his family says the Wednesday release of Trevor Reed doesn’t actually give them much hope.

In this edition of The Daily J, WWJ’s Zach Clark takes a look at what it’ll take to set Paul Whelan free.
