Whitmer signs bill to allow 2-year vehicle registration in Michigan

LANSING (WWJ) -- Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed a bill allowing drivers to choose a two-year option for vehicle registration, a move she says will save drivers a trip to the Secretary of State’s office or post office.

Whitmer on Wednesday signed House Bill 4117, which will give Michiganders the option to renew their registration every two years instead of annually. The governor says the changes will provide options for Michigan businesses to renew their special vehicle registration.

The legislation will go into effect in October 2022.

"Making life easier for Michiganders is one of my top priorities,” Whitmer said, per a press release. “These changes will build on the many new convenient services offered by the Secretary of State to put Michigan families and small businesses first.”

In addition to the expanded registration legislation, Whitmer also signed three other bills on Wednesday.

Senate Bill 220 will allow for no-cost registration renewal for certain agricultural and industrial vehicles.

House Bill 4281 will ensure continued funding for police and fire services in Harper Woods and Romulus, while House Bill 4059 streamlines children’s mental health treatment plans.

“The Michigan Department of State has entered a new era of operations and we are providing better and more convenient service than ever before. Our branch offices are open, pandemic operations are finished, and there is abundant availability for office visits across the state,” Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said, per a press release. “HB 4117 will add yet another convenient service to our catalog and, while not implementable as written, SB 220 will be beneficial once the Legislature requires insurance companies to provide the Department with electronic access to their policies for agricultural vehicles.”
