LANSING (WWJ) -- Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Friday indicated that she plans to veto Republican-led legislation to temporarily suspend Michigan's 27 cents per- gallon gas tax to help reduce surging gas prices.
Asked by a reporter where she stands on the issue, the governor responded, "When we are looking at how do we meet the needs of people that are really pinched right now, I think focusing...having a real laser focus on meeting those needs of the people that are struggling to keep their head above water is really important."
But, will Whitmer sign the bill to suspend the gas tax if it reaches her desk, as it's expected to?
Pressed to respond, the governor said: "Well, it will not have lived up to any of those things that I just said, so you can draw your own conclusion."
Whitmer said she's focused on promoting her plan to give taxpayers' relief through tax repeals for some retirement incomes and an increased Earned Income Tax Credit.
This comes after Michigan House Republicans passed the six-month tax suspension legislation on Wednesday by a vote of 63-39. Republican backers say any revenue loss would be "backfilled" with Rainy Day funds and federal dollars, although Democrats argue that that is not stated in the bill.
Last week. Whitmer joined several other governors is calling on the federal government to repeal the 18-cent federal gas tax.
