METRO DETROIT (WWJ) - The number of power outages in Metro Detroit has jumped to over 5,000 as residents dig out of Wednesday's winter storm that dumped 3 to 7 inches of snow across the listening area.

As of 9 a.m. on Thursday, DTE Energy estimated 5,706 customers were in the dark. The energy company's outage map showed the largest outages are in Grosse Pointe Park and some in the Cady and Macomb Township area.

Another swatch of power outages affect residents in Eastpointe, near Hayes and Nine Mile. and Livonia, near Five Mile and Farmington, were WWJ's Charlie Langton reported live.

"[A resident] says in his power went out about two o'clock this morning," Langton said. He described the neighborhood as "beautiful," with tree-lined streets that have been nicely plowed -- but none of that means much when there's no power.

"[Livonia is] one of three big cities without power because of these lines and the snow," Langton reported.

According to DTE, most of the outages are due to ice on the power lines, as well as tree damage in some areas.

Livonia resident Craig told Langton the biggest hurdle hasn't necessarily been getting his lights back on.

"You're scrambling, especially when you work from home most days... you're trying to get the internet back up and running," he said.

DTE said most customers should have power restored to affected areas around 12:30. Roughly 150 crews are out in the field addressing outage issues.
