
LEELANAU COUNTY (WWJ) - A 43-year-old woman and her dog were fatally struck by a suspected drunk driver while out on a walk in Northern Michigan on Thursday evening, troopers said.
Michigan State Police said the Lake Leelanau woman was walking with her dog along S. Lake Shore Drive near E. Lingaur Road in Leland Township after sundown when they were hit by a vehicle.
Troopers first received word of the crash involving a pedestrian just before 7:30 p.m. and arrived on scene to discover the woman and her pet deceased.
Upon further investigation, troopers said the woman was with her dog on the northbound shoulder of the road when she was hit by a northbound vehicle driven by a 52-year-old Lake Leelanau woman.
"The driver of the vehicle had consumed alcohol prior to the crash," MSP added. "The driver was arrested and lodged in the Leelanau County Jail."
The deceased victim's name has been withheld while police work on notifying family members.
