MADISON HEIGHTS (WWJ) - A young woman was arrested after authorities found two young children -- including a newborn -- left in car sets behind a dumpster in Madison Heights over the weekend.
According to Madison Heights Police Lt. David Koehler, officers were dispatched to Lamphere High School off 13 Mile Road near I-75 after a 911 caller reported finding two young children alone around 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 15.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the children in car seats out behind the dumpsters. Police determined the children were a 2-year-old and a 4-week-old.
The pair were taken to a local hospital for observation, but medical providers said they were in stable condition.
Koehler said in a prepared statement that the parents of the two children were identified and a 20-year-old woman was arrested in connection to the case.
Police said Child Protective Services was notified about the incident. Investigators determined the case has no connection to the Lamphere School District.
As reported by WDIV, the children were discovered by John Belyea, a driving instructor with the Official Driving School, who said he stopped at the high school to use the bathroom.
When Belya went up to the doors, he told WDIV that he heard a strange sound, similar to cats fighting.
He looked around and spotted the two young children strapped in car seats behind a small brick wall outside the school near the dumpsters.
Belya then called 911.
“I know, whoever did this, they were in a bad situation,” Belyea told Local 4′s Megan Woods about the incident. “I also feel bad for the young kids, because I don’t know how long they were there for.”
The investigation remains ongoing, Koehler said in an update to the case on Thursday, July 20. No other details were released, but police are looking for information from the public.
Anyone with any information regarding this incident has been asked to contact Detective Sergeant Hartunian at (248) 837-2737 or The Madison Heights Police Department at (248) 585-2100.
