DEARBORN (WWJ) – An investigation is ongoing after a woman was hit and killed on the Southfield Freeway Tuesday afternoon.

Michigan State Police closed southbound M-39 at Warren around 4:30 p.m. after getting reports there was a body in the middle of the freeway.

Police were initially told by 911 callers that a partially clothed woman was “dancing in the lanes of travel.” Later callers then reported she was unresponsive in the left lane.

The woman, later identified with the use of a fingerprint scanner as a 62-year-old woman from Detroit, was pronounced dead at the scene when EMS showed up, according to MSP. Her name was not released, pending the ongoing investigation.

Authorities say the driver that hit the woman did not stay at the scene. MSP officials are hoping the driver will contact them.

Officials did not immediately say what type of vehicle was suspected in the crash.

The woman, whose family has been notified, has a history of mental health issues, according to MSP officials.

It was not clear whether drugs or alcohol were suspected to be factors in the incident in regards to the driver or victim.

MSP officials are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the Metro South Post at 734-287-5000.

The freeway remained closed for several hours.

Images from MDOT cameras showed troopers on the freeway before 5 p.m.

WWJ Traffic Reporter Scott Ryan said there were delays on SB M-39 as far back as before I-96. To get around the closure, drivers can exit and take the service drive, or take Telegraph Road.
