"I'm not sure if he lost his balance or stepped the wrong way, but he fell down it appears to be about a four to five-foot fall," said Novi Police Chief David Molloy.

Molloy said the man, believed to be in his 20s, cut his head on a piece of metal. The man also injured one of his ankles, but neither injury is believed to be life-threatening.

Novi Fire Chief Jeff Johnson said he could not confirm initial reports of a partial road collapse at the site.

"We do know that there was a construction project underway with our water and sewer department," Johnson said. "And there's a contracted service that was out there, and the employee that got injured was part of that construction crew."

Johnson said the Michigan Department of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) has been called to investigate the accident.

Later in the day, 9 Mile Rd. remained closed between Beck and Napier for the investigation and ongoing water and sewer construction project.
