OAKLAND COUNTY (WWJ) - Police are said to have apprehended a person of interest in connection with a drive-by shooting that left a 7-year-old girl in critical condition on Friday evening in Pontiac.
It unknown if the suspect in custody is the driver of the vehicle or the shooter, a source close to the investigation disclosed to Fox 2.
Investigators with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said the girl was sitting in the backseat of a parked vehicle outside a residence near Wilson and Edmund Court in Pontiac just before 5 p.m. when a small, orange SUV pulled up.
A gunman in the SUV opened fire at the parked vehicle, striking the young girl in the head with a bullet, according to officials.
According to Fox 2, the girl's parents were nearby; they were uninjured in the shooting.
Authorities said the girl's condition is listed as "very critical."
The CEO of anti-crime group Pontiac Universal Crimes, Rahim Harris, spoke with Fox 2 and said gun violence within the city needs to stop.
"We just had three drive-bys, we just had a drive-by last night, a young lady got shot in the arm," Harris said.
"We've got to get these killers off the streets," he said. "It’s going to take a community to end the gun violence in Pontiac.
About an hour and a half after the shooting, police escorted several children out from inside the home while investigators processed the scene for evidence.
"Put these guns down please," Harris pleaded.
The investigation remains ongoing through the Oakland County Sheriff's Department.
