Following a tip from students, administrators at a North Carolina grade school found a loaded gun in the lunchbox belonging to an 11-year-old female student.

Parkton Elementary School’s band teacher received word on Monday, February 28, that the girl may have brought a loaded weapon onto school grounds and alerted the school’s administration.

The school’s resource officer and principal then conducted the search and found the gun, Robeson County school officials said.

As a result, the girl who brought the weapon on campus has been suspended for 365 days. The Parkton Police Department also says it is investigating whether or not criminal charges would be appropriate for the girl’s parents.

This marks the ninth time this school year that a gun has been found on a Robeson County school campus, and the third such incident happened at an elementary school in the district.

So far no reason has been given as to why the girl brought the gun to school.
