Americans don’t appear to be too excited about the possibility of President Joe Biden running for reelection in 2024, as a new survey shows a majority of those in his party don’t want him to run again.
The poll comes from NBC News and highlights that almost 3 out of 4 Americans do not believe Biden should run for a second term, following the recent reports that he would announce his 2024 campaign soon.
Among his own party, the poll found that 51% of Democrats are not supportive of the president seeking reelection, while 26% are.
Respondents for the poll who thought he shouldn’t run again were asked why they weren’t supportive, and the president’s age was a “major” concern for 48% of them, compared to 21% who said it was a minor concern and 29% who said it was no concern at all.
Biden has addressed the concerns around his age, as the 80-year-old said in February that he could see why supporters would be worried.
“No,” Biden said. “But it’s legitimate for people to raise issues about my age. It’s totally legitimate to do that. And the only thing I can say is, watch me.”
The president’s predecessor and former opponent didn’t receive much more support in the survey, as it found 60% of Americans don’t think former President Donald Trump should run either, compared to 35% who think he should.
The results from the NBC News poll come as a recent Yahoo News/YouGov poll found that Americans were concerned about a potential Biden and Trump rematch.
The poll, conducted before the news of Biden’s potential campaign announcement, found that 38% of respondents reported feeling “exhaustion” about the potential rematch, compared to 29% who felt “fear” and 23% who noted “sadness and fear.”
That poll also found that only 27% of respondents thought President Biden should run for reelection, along with only 43% of Democrats who thought he should be the party’s nominee.
Across the aisle, Republicans seemed to be a bit more behind Trump, as the NBC News poll reported that if a presidential primary were to be held today for the GOP, 46% of respondents said they would vote for Trump, and 31% would vote for his main challenger, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Still, DeSantis has not yet announced a 2024 campaign, despite going head-to-head against Trump in polls for the last few months. The same goes for Biden, although he is expected to make an announcement via video on April 25.
