Hard work and dedication always pay off in the end, and for one Burger King employee who hasn’t missed a day of work in 27 years, it’s paying off greatly.
Kevin Ford, a cook, and cashier at the Burger King location in Las Vegas McCarran International Airport, went viral last June when he posted a video on TikTok sharing that he had not called in sick in nearly three decades.
Since the father of four posted the video in June of 2022, he has received over 13,500 crowdsourced donations, totaling upwards of $407,132, as of midday Wednesday.
The original video that Ford posted showed off what he received from HMSHost, the hiring company for Burger King, as a reward for his years of service.
The plastic goodie bag was full of items that many online thought were cheap gifts, including a movie ticket, a Starbucks cup, a bag of candy, and more.
While many criticized the rewards in the comments, Ford was extremely grateful for the gifts, showing them off proudly to his followers.
One of Ford’s daughters, Seryna, decided to create a GoFundMe page to ask people to donate if those who thought he deserved better for his dedication wanted to bless him.
The donation page says he would use any donations to help him “visit his grandchildren” and subsidize his retirement.
Ford, a single father, has been working at the fast-food joint since 1996 when he gained custody of his first two daughters. He stayed with the chain because of the health insurance, which Seryna says covered his four daughters through high school and college.
“My dad continues to work there, because though he does look young, he is coming up on retirement age, and leaving would cost him his retirement,” Seryna wrote in the GoFundMe description.
Donors on the page shared encouraging words for Ford, with one person donating $27 for “every year you went to work without missing 1 day.”
This story brought me to tears,” a donor commented on the GoFundMe page.
Ford shared in April that he was able to visit his grandchildren in Texas because of the money raised. He shared that it has “changed my life forever.”
“The miracle of generosity of so many people all around the world has allowed me to save for retirement and my children’s and grandchildren’s futures and even to someday soon own my own home dreams really can come true,” Ford said.
