A small boat was aided by a passing Carnival Cruise Line ship on Friday. However, the cruise ship did not take on the extra passengers as they refused to get on the bigger boat.
According to a report from CruiseHive, the interaction took place off the coast of Cozumel, Mexico. One passenger on board the boat, Byron Brown, took video of the passing ship, which appeared to be made with several materials including duct tape.
The video was shared on Twitter and showed about 12 people inside the craft as it continued to paddle past the much larger cruise liner.
CruiseHive reported that the occupants did not want to get on the bigger ship, but they did ask for food and aid.
The cruise ship, the Carnival Celebration, provided food, water, and assistance to the smaller boat, which its occupants accepted.
Chris Williams, the Cruise Director for Carnival Cruise Line, shared a statement on the ship’s encounter with the boat with CruiseHive.
“The most important thing to us of course here at Carnival Cruise Line and our captain and his amazing team is to make sure that we always make sure that people are safe and preserving life at sea,” Williams said. “We have spoken to the people in the boat and they do not need any rescuing at this time. All they need is of course any water or food. We’ve done everything to make sure that they have that and everyone seems in good health.”
The United States Coast Guard was notified of the boat, and it was allowed to continue on its journey.
