Florida's Department of Business and Professional Regulation is investigating a holiday-themed drag show in South Florida.

The department claims to have received "multiple complaints" alleging the December 26 performance of "A Drag Queen Christmas" was "sexually explicit" and "marketed to children."

Press Secretary Bryan Griffin confirmed Governor Ron DeSantis launched an investigation, and thanked those who "flagged the event."

"The Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) is aware of multiple complaints about a sexually explicit performance marketed to children held in Fort Lauderdale on December 26th," Griffin said on Twitter. "The Department is actively investigating this matter, including video footage and photographs from the event."

The statement said that the department plans to share any evidence collected in its investigation with the state Department of Law Enforcement for criminal liability. The venue that held the event, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, could lose its business and liquor licenses if any violations are confirmed.

A spokesperson for the venue said admittance to "A Drag Queen Christmas" was limited to patrons 18 years or older, unless accompanied by a parent.

"To ensure patrons were aware of the adult themes and content in the show, this information was on the website and ticket purchase page; all ticket buyers were also informed directly through a 'Know Before You Go' email, a customer communication that is sent out in advance of most shows,” the center said in a statement to WFLA.

The Department of Business and Professional Regulation is the agency charged with licensing and regulating State of Florida businesses and professionals, and operates under the executive branch of the governor.
