During a visit to a Washington, D.C., pediatric facility, U.S. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden said children who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 are “heroes.”

Biden made an appearance alongside U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy and two D.C.-area pro basketball players, Alysha Clark of the Mystics and Thomas Bryant of the Wizards.

“You’re the real heroes,” Biden told the children in attendance. “You have your superpower, and now you’re protected against COVID.”

Since the vaccine was approved for children aged 5 and up two weeks ago, about 10% of newly-eligible kids have been vaccinated, according to numbers provided by the White House.

Biden and Murthy have been touring the country campaigning in favor of children receiving the vaccination.

During an appearance in Houston earlier this month, Biden again advocated for parents to bring their kids to get the shot.

“I can’t promise you that the dangers of the world will become any less frightening. I mean, just wait until your kids start driving. But, with this vaccine we can take away at least one of those big worries,” Biden said.

The COVID vaccine has proved over 90% effective in children aged 5-11, according to numbers reported by the FDA.
