Hecklers jeered and mocked former Vice President Mike Pence during a speech he gave Friday.
“Boo! Traitor!” yelled several members of the audience at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s 12th Road to Majority Policy Conference just outside Orlando, Florida. One woman heard shouting “traitor” was escorted out of the conservative conference by security.
"It is great to be back with so many patriots," Pence said, speaking for nearly a half-hour and ignoring the insults as he described himself as a “Christian, conservative, and Republican -- in that order.”
The remarks likely reference the former vice president’s refusal to block the constitutional process of certifying votes and electors ahead of President Joe Biden’s inauguration in January. Many Trump supporters were enraged when Pence said he couldn’t do anything to change the election results. At the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, rioters called for Pence to be hanged.
Despite the death threats and disagreements, Pence praised his former Oval Office colleague.
“President Trump taught us what Republicans can accomplish when we stand firm on conservative principles and don't back down," Pence said.
Pence, who could be a Republican candidate for president in 2024, also outlined a “winning agenda” for the GOP to secure majorities in both houses of Congress ahead of mid-term elections.
The former VP did receive several resounding rounds of applause amid the boos.
