A Delta Air Lines passenger is facing charges after opening one of the plane’s doors and sliding down an emergency exit slide as the plane prepared for takeoff.
The incident took place aboard Delta Flight 1714 from Los Angeles to Seattle on Saturday.
The plane was stationary on the runway at LAX, holding to taxi for takeoff, when the passenger exited the aircraft after activating the emergency exit slide, CNN reported.
After making his escape, the man jumped onto the back of a baggage cart, Fox News reported. Workers caught the man and held him down until police arrived, the report added.
In a statement to CNN, the Federal Aviation Administration said the passenger was arrested by local law enforcement. Police told Fox News that the man was taken to a local hospital for a mental evaluation.
It's not clear why the man was trying to escape from the airplane. No additional information was provided.
Delta re-accommodated passengers on a new aircraft and apologized for the inconvenience and delay in travel plans, CNN reported. The incident caused a roughly three hour delay, per FOX News.
The FAA is investigating the incident.
