Despite the serious charges brought against former President Donald Trump for his alleged mishandling of classified documents, a new poll has found a majority of Americans would like to see him pardoned in the name of national unity.
The Harvard-Harris poll was released on Friday and examined how Americans are feeling about a variety of topics, including the 37 felony charges Trump is facing, which carries a maximum sentence of 400 years in federal prison.
The poll found that despite the legal challenges, 59% of Republicans would still choose the former president in the GOP primary. On top of that, Trump also beat Biden in a theoretical head-to-head matchup, 45% to 39%.
When it comes to the charges against Trump, 58% of respondents felt the case against him was strong, though 53% would support him being pardoned for the sake of unity.
Among Republicans, that number jumped to 80%, while 48% of Independents supported a pardon and 30% of Democrats.
When it comes to how respondents view the state of America, Mark Penn, the co-director of the Harvard CAPS / Harris Poll, shared that even though the country is split politically, about “100% are unhappy with the direction of the country, the economy, and their political leaders.”
“Biden’s approval is frozen in place despite the debt ceiling deal and a recovering stock market; yet Trump’s numbers are also unshaken after an unprecedented federal indictment,” Penn shared.
There remains only one close rival for the former president among the field of Republican hopefuls, as 14% of those surveyed said they would back Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Other Republicans in the top five included former Vice President Mike Pence, Nikki Haley, and Vivek Ramaswamy.
The poll was taken June 14-15 and included the responses of 2,090 registered voters.
