Spring practice is winding down for the LSU Tigers as they will hold their spring game on Saturday. How does linebacker Harold Perkins feel about first-year defensive coordinator Blake Baker?

“I love the transition, I fell like Coach Baker knows how to relate to his players, his scheme fits the defense and I’m really excited to see where we’ll go,” Perkins said.

LSU ranked 105th in the nation in total defense last season. And the belief is that LSU’s defense can only go up from here.

Perkins recognizes his performance and his ability to make plays will go a long way to an improved defense in 2024.

“Everybody looking at me, I can’t come with no excuses, I got to do my part, play my role and I got to do it to a T,” said Perkins.

Baker and Perkins have a history. Before Perkins was a defensive coordinator at Missouri. He was a linebackers coach at LSU and helped recruit Perkins out of Cy Park High School near Houston, Texas.

“I think he can do it all,” Baker said. “I think you can bring him off the edge, he can play inside linebacker. We’re not going to put him in one spot. He’s really good as a blitzer from the inside, we’re finding out this spring.”

After spending most of his first two seasons as an outside linebacker. He’s playing in the box, as a weakside linebacker.

“I’m really liking the role they got me doing,” Perkins said. “Just trusting what you see, trusting your eyes. Just being a football player and not really thinking too much. I think that’s something I’m really good at just going out there and playing, not really thinking too much.”

LSU fans think Perkins is a really good player and it’s up to the defensive coaching staff to make sure he wreaks havoc on opposing offenses.
