LSU football has filled a key coaching position as it looks toward the fall and a highly anticipated Year 2 under Brian Kelly.
That role is defensive line coach and will be filled by Jimmy Lindsey, who had served in the same role for South Carolina each of the past two seasons. Tigers head coach Brian Kelly announced the move on Monday.
“Jimmy has a proven track record of developing defensive linemen," Kelly said, "and I know our players are going to benefit from his expertise.”
LSU was in need of a new leader for its DL group after the former position coach, Jamar Cain, was pilfered by Sean Payton to become a pass rush specialist on the Denver Broncos coaching staff. It's one of many coaches and assistants with Louisiana ties to head out to Denver since Payton was traded there earlier this offseason.
Lindsey was born in South Carolina but lists Morven, N.C., as his hometown. he spent the 2020 season coaching defensive ends at Illinois on Lovie Smith's staff. He served as defensive coordinator for the finale agaisnt Penn State after Smith was relieved of his coaching duties.
A former linebacker at Chattanooga (1996-99), that's where he began his coaching career as grad assistant in 2000 before being elevated to the role of linebackers coach in 2022. He's also had coaching stops at Gardner-Webb, Miami (Ohio), UT-Martin, Furman, Georgia Southern and Western Kentucky. Lindsey has also worked with four NFL teams (Browns, Lions, Broncos and Chargers) as part of the minority coaching internship program.
