It was a throwback first half in LSU-Alabama, but it still couldn't avoid some bizarre circumstances.
That came on a play shortly before halftime with Alabama driving into Tigers territory for a potential go-ahead score.
Bryce Young completed a ball to tight end Cameron Latu for a first down up the left sideline, but Sage Ryan ripped the ball away on the tackle. Greg Brooks dove in for a clear recovery, and LSU was given the ball with time on the clock to extend their 7-3 lead.
But wait, the refs had to get involved. As always, play was stopped for an extended review, and it didn't go the Tigers' way. Latu was laying out of bounds and reached in to knock the ball out of Brooks' hands before he had gained complete possession, according to the referees. That meant the play technically ended as a fumble out of bounds. Alabama retained the ball.
LSU fans were understandably furious. One person who agreed? That'd be Drew Brees.
The Tigers defense remained composed and held the Crimson Tide to another field goal to head into halftime leading 7-6, but it was undoubtedly a momentum-swinging takeaway that was ... taken away. Rough.
