LSU football is adding depth at a position that represents one of its biggest question marks for the 2023 season, and it's doing so with a familiar name.
Former Archbishop Rummel standout Logan Diggs has chosen LSU as his destination in the NCAA Transfer Portal, giving coach Brian Kelly another potential option at a position with a lot of bodies, but few clear answers.
Diggs spent the past two seasons at Notre Dame, where he was recruited by Kelly. The 6-foot, 200-pound Diggs appears in 20 games for the Fighting Irish, logging 217 carries for 1,052 yards and 7 TDs, along with 16 catches for 267 yards and another 3 TDs.
LSU was considered the front-runner for Diggs, according to 247Sports, though he also had reported interest from South Carolina. Diggs add to yet another impressive transfer haul for Brian Kelly in 2023, joining former Maryland OT Mason Lunsford, former Oregon State LB Omar Speights, former Texas LB Ovie Oghoufo, former Ohio State CB JK Johnson, former West Virginia DL Jordan Jefferson, former Syracuse CB Duce Chestnut, former Alabama WR Aaron Anderson, former Florida DL Jalen Lee, former Texas A&M CB Denver Harris, former Arizona DL Paris Shand, former Oregon EDGE Bradyn Swinson and former Southern CB Zy Alexander.
Diggs will join a running back room with several potential options, but few sure things. Senior Josh Williams enters the year as the likely lead back, though he was one of several players at the position who did not see action in the spring for a handful of reasons. Noah Cain and Trey Holly saw a majority of the work up through the spring game, with Cain receiving high praise from his head coach for his development.
Armoni Goodwin is an intriguing option, but he was another of the absences and has struggled to stay healthy throughout his college career. The biggest question mark resides with John Emery Jr., whom Kelly said has a road back to the roster, though it will be dependent on academics. That's been a near-constant refrain for Emery throughout his LSU career after entering as a top recruit. He's appeared in 30 games over his four seasons, logging 190 carries for 940 yards and 13 TDs, along with 33 catches for 262 yards and another 2 TDs.
LSU opens its season on Sunday, Sept. 3 against Florida State at Camping World Stadium in Orlando.
