LSU head baseball coach Jay Johnson made it clear after his team's departure from the NCAA Regionals that the pitching had to improve, but it appears he'll have to find a new leader for that staff before that can happen.

Tigers pitching coach Jason Kelly was announced Friday as the hire for the top job at the University of Washington, according to a report from D1Baseball.

Kelly had previously served as the University of Washington's pitching coach from 2013-'19 and returns to the team he helped lead to the College World Series in 2018, after which he was named National Assistant Coach of the Year.

Kelly was the pitching coach for two seasons at Arizona State before joining Johnson's staff in Baton Rouge. He led the LSU pitching staff to post a combined ERA of 4.32 and an opponent batting average of .240, with 610 strikeouts. The team has already gone to work in improving its rotation from a year ago, adding former Creighton standout Dylan Tebrake via the transfer portal, who logged a record of 8-2 with an ERA of 2.81 last season.
