It's a new year, but LSU football didn't take long to fall from high expectations and out of the AP Top 25.
The Tigers began the year ranked No. 16, but failed to solidify that ranking throughout a 38-27 loss to UCLA at the Rose Bowl and fell clear out of the weekly poll. The Bruins climbed into the poll at No. 16 in their own right.
The poll was released Tuesday due to the opening weekend's games stretching into Monday, and for good reason. Ole Miss jumped into the poll at No. 20 after a convincing win over Louisville despite being without coach Lane Kiffin due to a break-through case of COVID.
It's the second consecutive season that LSU dropped quickly with an opening loss after beginning the season in the AP Top 25. The Tigers opened at No. 6 last season and fell to No. 20 after a season-opening loss to Mississippi State. It took two more weeks but they ultimately fell from the rankings entirely after a loss to Missouri and never returned.
get a chance to right the ship this week when they host McNeese State, quarterbacked by Ed Orgeron's son, Cody, at Tiger Stadium.
