Two different LSU pitchers have set massive strikeout marks in a matter of days at the College World Series, the latest coming with Ty Floyd's incredible day against the Florida Gators.
Floyd was dealing from the first pitch, ultimately striking out 17 Florida batters over his 8 innings. It was the most strikeouts by an LSU pitcher in any game since Scott Schultz in 1995, and it tied the record for the most strikeouts in a 9-inning College World Series game. It also tied for the most strikeouts in any single game this season.
Floyd's strikeout total ties Arizona State's Ed Bane, who struck out 17 batters at the CWS in 1972, according to ESPN Stats & Info. Floyd's previous career high in strikeouts was 10, which he tied against Wake Forest earlier in the Omaha run.
The performance continued a trend of outstanding pitching for the Tigers, coming on the heels of an 8-inning shutout gem from Paul Skenes in a win over Wake Forest to get the Tigers to the title series. In that game Skenes broke the long-standing SEC record for strikeouts, breaking Ben McDonald's mark of 202.
Floyd left in a 3-3 game, with Riley Cooper taking over for the 9th inning in the first of a three-game series to crown this year's champion. He went the final three innings working out of multiple jams and did not allow a run. The Tigers ultimately won in the 11th inning for the second consecutive game, with Cade Beloso stinging a home run over the right field wall off of Gators closer Brandon Neely.
