Are the 'road dogs' just a happy sideplot to another LSU season, or can they turn a surprise Super Regional trip into another College World Series trip in Paul Mainieri's final run?

The answer to that question will begin to be told starting Saturday, as the Tigers face off with a familiar SEC foe in Knoxville.

THE HISTORY

LSU baseball has faced off with Tennessee once before this season, and it didn't go the Tigers' way. Despite winning their final four road SEC series, it was their opener against Tennessee that ended in a Vols sweep and set the Tigers on an uphill climb the rest of the way.

Those results:
- March 26Tennessee 3, LSU 1; W: Chad Dallas; L: Landon Marceaux
- March 27Tennessee 9, LSU 8 (11); W: Sean Hunley; L: Devin Fontenot
- March 28: Tennessee 3, LSU 2; W: Sean Hunley; L: Garrett Edwards

The Tigers, now jokingly calling themselves the 'Road Dogs' have thrived on the road since, culminating in a victory at the Eugene regional, where they won four consecutive elimination games that included back-to-back wins over host Oregon.

That performance sent LSU to its 15th Super Regional in program history. The Tigers head into the 2021 series 17-11 all-time in Super Regional games, advancing 8 of those times to the College World Series. But history is against them in one regard: LSU has never won a Super Regional on the road.
