The pick is in, and LSU star Angel Reese will be headed to ... the Chicago Sky.
Reese was the No. 7 pick in the WNBA draft on Monday, the first LSU player to be selected in the first round since LaSondra Barrett in 2012.
“[I'm proud of] being able to leave my impact," Reese said after the pick was announced. "So many people came out to day and how they can relate to me, so a kid from Baltimore ain’t supposed to be here, so I’m just happy."
Reese only spent two of her four college seasons at LSU, but she left an indelible impact during that span. As a sophomore she averaged 23 points and 15.4 rebounds as she helped lead the Tigers to their first women's basketball title in program history.
She set the program's single-game rebound record (28), while also setting the LSU, SEC and NCAA records for double-doubles in a season (34). Reese continued to put on stellar numbers in her second and final season in Baton Rouge, averaging 18.4 points and 13.4 rebounds as the Tigers charged to another Elite Eight appearance before being ousted by Caitlin Clark and Iowa.
LSU head coach Kim Mulkey was in attendance at the draft, along with Reese's mother and brother.
Reese, a Baltimore native, spent her first two seasons at the University of Maryland before transferring to LSU. Her college career will be remembered for gaudy numbers and success, but also for her brash persona that drew significant criticism. Her rivalry with Clark, which both downplayed ahead of their rematch this past season, undoubtedly helped grow the women's game and that showdown in the Elite Eight was the highest-rated basketball game of any kind at that point since the 2018 Eastern Conference Finals.
Clark was, unsurprisingly, the first player selected on Monday by the Indiana Fever. Other players selected ahead of Reese included Cameron Brink (L.A. Sparks), Kamilla Cardoso (Chicago Sky), Rickea Jackson (Seattle Storm), Jacy Sheldon (Dallas Wings) and Aaliyah Edwards (Washington Mystics).
