The LSU women’s basketball team has taken heat for not being on the court for the national anthem, but the football team has not been present for the national anthem in decades.
LSU Athletics Director Scott Woodward said in a statement on Friday they’ll review their processes. It was in response to Governor Jeff Landry’s call for college teams to be present for the national anthem.
LSU football coach Brian Kelly said on Saturday, if the administration wants them on the field for the national anthem, they’ll proudly be out there.
Kelly says college football teams are usually in the locker room for the anthem.
“I’ve been doing it for 33 years, I can tell you on my hand, how many times, I’ve been out there for the national anthem,” said Kelly.
It remains to be seen if LSU’s administration will make changes to its pregame format so that the football team can be 4 the field for the national anthem.
Charges against Trey Holly reduced
Suspended LSU running back Trey Holly no longer faces a charge of attempted second degree murder. A Union Parish Grand jury didn’t find enough evidence to indict him on attempted murder for a shooting that happened in Farmerville on February 15th.
Holly has still not been completely cleared of the shooting that injured two people. The grand jury has indicted the former Union Parish star on a charge of illegal use of a weapon or dangerous instrumentality against Holly.
His attorney Mike Small is confident Holly will be found not guilty.
Kelly says they are hearing this case could be resolved soon.
“They’re talking about sometime in the middle of April that we could see a full resolution to this, at that time, we will begin the process and assisting him for reinstatement, and we will advocate for him on his behalf and welcome him back,” said Kelly.
Holly’s future looked bleak when he was arrested on an attempted murder charge. Kelly said based on what Holly told them, they were confident this would be a positive resolution for the state’s all-time leading rusher in Louisiana high school football history.
One more week of spring football
The spring game is this Saturday at Tiger Stadium. Spring football has flown under the radar with the Lady Tigers basketball team’s run through the NCAA Tournament and the baseball team’s struggles.
Coach Brian Kelly’s squad has avoided major injuries and he’s seen improvement.
Kelly says they’ve worked hard improving the running game. They can’t rely on Jayden Daniels’ making plays with his legs, so they are counting on a veteran offensive line to create holes for the tailbacks.
Kelly has also been impressed with the development of receiver Kyren Lacy and likes what he is seeing from defensive back Major Burns, who is playing as a nickel back in the defensive secondary.
“Major was a bit sloppy last year in coverage, I know everybody would point to the interception against Missouri, which is a singularly a huge play, but there were many times that we didn’t have him in coverage on the right guy, he’s been really, really good.”
Spring game on Saturday is at 1 PM in Tiger Stadium.
