For the second time this season LSU’s defense gave up over 500 yards of offense. The Tigers gave up 586 total yards in a 45-41 loss to Missouri Saturday and LSU head coach Ed Orgeron didn’t mince words following the matchup.

“Really poor showing on defense,” Orgeron said. “We’ve got to coach better, No. 1, starts with me. Players got to make plays. (We) couldn’t stop the, run receivers wide open down field…. It was embarrassing and we got to get it fixed.”

The Tigers (1-2) are in playing a new defensive scheme this season under first-year defensive coordinator Bo Pelini and save for an Improved showing at Vanderbilt, after allowing an SEC record for passing yards in Week 1, LSU’s 4-3 scheme has had less than desirable results.

Orgeron said after Saturday’s loss that he still has faith in Pelini and the defense but added that the unit needs to quickly improve.

“I love Bo,” Orgeron said when asked about the hire following the game. “I think Bo is going to be great defensive coordinator. He’s done it before but we have to get better.

“There’s some things that we need to fix and we need to coach better. There’s somethings that we need to look at schematically and see where we can get better and I know we will.”

One area the Tigers  struggled Satruday was against big plays as Missouri quarterback Connor  hit six different receivers for a gain of at least 20 yards. LSU also allowed Missouri’s backs to average over five yards per carry as the team combined for 180 yards on the ground.

“Too many missed assignments,” Orgeron said. “I mean guys running wide open down the field that’s the number one thing. Too many missed calls , whether we are in and out whether we are zone and stuff like that.”

Orgeron did say he felt he had the right  players on the field and that they can execute the defense but will need to get better

“We’re plus three in the turnover ratio,” Orgeron said. “We got some pressure on the quarterback. We’re doing some things well.

“I got to look at the tape but, hey, we’re going to play some better teams and we got to be a little bit more physical up front. I think that the run really hurt us today. We couldn’t stop it but I got to see why.  “
