The past 365 days have been eventful ones for Paul Skenes.
One of college baseball's top pitchers, the California native chose to transfer to LSU from Air Force before his junior year, a year that would be his last as an amateur.
By year's end, Skenes had been named both college baseball's best pitcher and best overall player, and he had helped restore a storied LSU program to its previous place atop the college baseball world, helping the Tigers to their first national championship in 14 years.
The cherry on top was Skenes's selection as the first overall pick of the Major League Baseball draft. And Tuesday, the mustached pro prospect penned a heartfelt thank you and farewell to Baton Rouge.
In the note, Skenes called 2023 "the most gratifying and rewarding year of my life," and described how he was humbled by the team's accomplishments.
Skenes will now enter the farm system of the Pittsburgh Pirates, but some analysts believe he could elevate to the majors before his rookie season is over.
