Brees: Saints' late surge 'gets you excited about the future'

The New Orleans Saints don't have the playoffs to play for, but that hasn't stopped the team from ripping off a pair of wins against the two teams vying for the NFC South title.

With those victories led by impressive clutch-time performances from rookie QB Tyler Shough, Saints legend Drew Brees sees a lot of potential upside for this group, even at 4-10, as he broke down on WWL Radio this week.

"I think it gets you excited about the future," Brees told Bobby Hebert. "Tyler Shough just continues to impress with his leadership and finding ways to win games. A lot of these games have been kind of close, win them in the 4th quarter, win them on the last possession type of games and you’ve got some of your big playmakers making plays at the end. ... It’s fun to watch the team come together and play this way and find ways to win.”

The schedule sets up favorably the rest of the way for Shough and Co., with the Jets (3-11) and Titans (2-12) next up before a rematch with the Falcons. The Saints go into Week 16 as a 5.5-point betting favorite against the Jets, an indicator that the effort and intensity the Saints are still bringing to their matchups has not gone unnoticed. Brees sees that as a major positive for head coach Kellen Moore in Year 1.

“I haven’t anybody say a bad thing about Kellen Moore," Brees continued. "Every player that I’ve spoken to in that locker room appreciates his leadership, appreciates his communication style and the way that he’s helping to build the culture in the building."

If the Saints can take down the Jets it'll mark their first three-game win streak since the 2022 season. The Saints haven't had a win streak of longer than three games since they reeled off nine straight victories in 2020, Brees' last season in the NFL.

"You’re trying to now kind of build the offense around a new guy, so ... it just takes a little time," Brees said. "Nobody wants to start off 1-8. I think you look at many of those games and you say, hey, it was a one-possession game, unfortunately we just couldn’t find a way to win. Now, all of a sudden, we’re finding a way to win those.”

The Saints host the Jets at noon, Sunday inside the Caesars Superdome. Catch all the action on WWL and Audacy.
