Detillier: 'No surprise' that Saints picked Jake Haener to start, but the hook could be short

The New Orleans Saints have landed on their starter for Week 15, and it's Jake Haener.

That's exactly what Mike Detillier expected to see with Derek Carr still on the mend, as he broke down the decision Thursday on WWL Radio.

“It really doesn’t surprise me," Detillier said. "They haven’t given him that opportunity like they did with Spencer to be the starter. … I think the hook will be short. If it kind of falls, struggling big-time, I think the hook will be quick on Jake Haener and again, you might see both of them.”

It's the second time this season that the Saints have had to choose a backup between the second-year pro and rookie Spencer Rattler. When Carr missed three games earlier this season it was Rattler, with the Saints losing those all three games in one-sided fashion. Haener's most extensive action in the NFL came in relief of Rattler's final start when he took over in the second half against the Chargers.

The line of 9-17 for 122 yards doesn't jump off the page, but he did lead multiple extended drives in a game where little offense was found.

“I do know that there are people within that building that do believe he can be a starting quarterback," Detillier continued.

Haener will now be asked to lead the Saints offense against a Commanders squad that's trying to solidify a playoff bid, and Detillier has a bit of advice.

“I’d stay away from Marshon Lattimore,” he said.
