The Saints and Chargers offenses started their team drills at the same time, so why did New Orleans wrap things up about 15 minutes earlier than the action on the other field?

It's because the offense for the Saints is operating at a breakneck pace, and that's a good thing, as Deuce McAllister explained on WWL and the first set of joint practices out in Costa Mesa.

"The pace that our offense goes, compared to their offense ... it’s just so much faster," McAllister told Mike Detillier and Bobby Hebert. "I know that we pretty much have the same offensive staff as when Sean [Payton] was here. But when we came out 4 years ago, you could just see it. And what I mean by that, yea, I understand that Drew [Brees] was the quarterback and he knew the offense, you play fast, you get the call in and out. But there were times where both teams start at the same time and the Saints offense, they’ve gotten off three plays and the Chargers have run one."

Any comparison to Brees is high praise for Derek Carr, but even moreso considering he's only about halfway through an offseason as he picks up the system for the first time. At one point he overthrew Juwan Johnson and the ball landed in the waiting arms of star Chargers safety Derwin James.

“It was literally the tempo that the offense ran," McAllister said. "Now, you’ve still got to execute the play … but the tempo that they ran, even without having coach Payton there, it was just so much faster than the Chargers.”

The Saints and Chargers are back in action for another set of joint practices on Friday ahead of the Week 2 preseason showdown at SoFi Stadium. The
