Sean Payton has a big decision to make -- a lot of them, honestly -- before the Saints face off with the Packers in their 2021 season opener.
But he needs enough information first, and a lot of that will come from Monday night's showdown with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jameis Winston will get the start, and Taysom Hill will come next. But where does the coach stand on the position battle halfway through the preseason?
Payton spoke with WWL Radio's Voice of the Saints Mike Hoss ahead of the game.
“You’re always, as a coach, you want as much [information] as possible. And you’re wanting to evaluate everything, and our job is to find, A. The right 53 for the roster, the right set of players for the practice. And then with that putting these guys in the best positions to be successful," Payton said. "So back to the question of quarterback, you know, we’re constantly paying attention, ‘hey, are these things that these guys do well?’ Sooner or later we’ll have to make a decision and then we’ll have to go from there.”
Sooner would likely mean before the Saints' final preseason game on Saturday, which appears to be the goal, as reported by NBC's Peter King. But later would be any time before the team faces off with the Packers on Sept. 12.
"I don’t feel like it’s time to make the announcement because we’re not there yet," Payton said. "We’re still trying to complete the process.”
