Trevor Penning is already my favorite player on the Saints roster.
He is a rookie, and is unapologetic about his style of play.
“It’s tough sport, for tough people.” That is what Penning said after getting into a little skirmish with Payton Turner. during practice in the first padded session of training camp.
This dude has a nasty streak and I love it. Penning has been itching to put the pads on since the Saints selected him the first round.
Penning did not need to say anything other than “tough” in the previous quote. He is young, but he is a throwback-style player who will not back down and embraces the to-the-echo-of-the-whistle style of play.
Penning has some work to do, starting camp as the second-team left tackle. But if he is as aggressive at improving as he is tough as a blocker/protector, he is going to be just fine. He acknowledged his biggest area of needed improvement is his pass-blocking.
I do not know if Penning is going to be a long term answer at left tackle but I do know that he’s toughness is not up for conversation.
