The New Orleans Saints have taken part in a pair of white-knuckle games that went down to the wire. The only problem: Both have ended in losses.
There have been errors and issues, but there's no questioning that Kellen Moore's squad is out there playing hard and fighting to the end. But, as the Cajun Cannon Bobby Hebert broke after a 26-21 loss to the 49ers, this is the NFL, your best effort isn't good enough without a number in the win column.
"I think we might be saying this a lot, so close but so far," Hebert said. "I think they’re playing hard, but you don’t get brownie points. You don’t get participation trophies. I mean, a loss is a loss and now the Saints are 0-2."

It was another game that saw the Saints with a chance at a final drive to flip the result, but again it fell short. This one was a drive that started inside their 10 and moved just shy of midfield with plenty of time remaining, but the drive ended in a turnover on downs. It was a game that felt stacked in the Saints' favor with 49ers starts George Kittle and Brock Purdy unavailable.
The Saints couldn't take advantage, and they're now staring down a difficult road swing that could easily drop the Saints to 0-4 if things don't shape up quickly.
"It's not going to get easier. It’s going to be a monumental upset, I’m telling you, if we got to Seattle and we win," Hebert continued. "It’s going to be a hostile environment and I know the 49ers came up with a win and they were in a dogfight. I think we can be in a dogfight against Seattle, hopefully that’s the case, but I would be surprised if we win, same thing at Buffalo. ... that’s why I thought we had to win one of these games."
