The New Orleans Saints landed Tyler Shough at No. 40 overall, and the Cajun Cannon's assessment is a simple one: In Kellen Moore we trust.
That's because the decision to land the veteran college QB has to land on the shoulders of the new head coaching era, as Bobby Hebert and the rest of the Draft Fest crew broke down after the pick.
"Think about when they put their minds together. ... Look at out coaching staff, it’s a bunch of quarterbacks," Hebert told Mike Detillier, Deuce McAllister, Mike Hoss and Steve Geller.
"They ain’t picking him if they don’t think that son of a gun can’t play. I can tell you right now.”

Detillier agreed when it comes to the 25-year-old quarterback who has spent time split between three different programs. The Saints made Shough the third quarterback drafted after Cam Ward at No. 1 to the Titans and Jaxson Dart at No. 24 to the Giants. The pick was made with names like Shedeur Sanders and Jalen Milroe still on the board.
“This is a Kellen Moore pick," Detillier said. "They didn’t pick this without Kellen Moore saying that’s my guy, because he could’ve had Shedeur, he could’ve had Milroe and he picked Shough. To me, this one is not a Jeff Ireland pick or a Mickey Loomis pick, this is Kellen Moore. This is why you hired him, to say find me the next starter at quarterback.”
And that's exactly what the Cajun Cannon expects to play out, even with a quarterback competition likely roiling in camp. If Derek Carr is unable to play, it'll come down to Spencer Rattler vs Shough, and it's hard to bet against the QB drafted by the current regime in that scenario. Interestingly, both players are from the Phoenix, Arizona area and have the same birthday, with Shough exactly one year older.
“I would be shocked if he doesn’t ... beat out Spencer Rattler, and that means we’re not getting Aaron Rodgers," Hebert said. "I’m going to go out on a limb right now, Day 1, he’ll be the starting quarterback to kick off the season, because of his age. … He ain’t no little boy. He’s gonna be the starting quarterback, I think, come Day 1.”
The Saints went on to address the defense with their other two Day 2 selections, landing Texas DT Vernon Broughton II at No. 71, then Virginia safety Jonas Sanker at No. 93, adding to a class that began with Texas OT Kelvin Banks Jr. at No. 9 overall. The Saints have five more selections to work with on the final day of the draft, including a pair of fourth rounders.
