The New Orleans Saints defense had a solid, bounce-back day after surrendering big plays on Day 1 of minicamp. But the offense had the last laugh.
Taking the ball in a simulated 2-minute situation trailing 28-23, Derek Carr's offense drove the field for a touchdown. QB1 completed five consecutive pass attempts, culminating in a touchdown to Alvin Kamara, followed by a 2-point conversion to Rashid Shaheed for good measure.
"That’s when you can just see Derek Carr, who he trusts when you’re trying to move the chains," said the Cajun Cannon Bobby Hebert.
Those five completions went to:
- Alvin Kamara
- Taysom Hill
- Taysom Hill
- Taysom Hill
- Alvin Kamara
The score came on a wheel route-type play with Kamara getting matched up on Carl Granderson in coverage. AK made the most of it, hauling in a good touch pass from Carr in the type of situation that the Saints struggled to execute last season.
"That’s when the offense you say, boy, I like this coverage. ... There’s no way in the world that Carl Granderson should be able to ever cover Alvin Kamara," Hebert continued. "He ended up wide open and scored a touchdown and then the 2-point play he hit Rashid Shaheed. So even though the defense bounced back from yesterday, the first minicamp practice, the defense bounced back today but the offense finished strong in the 2-minute."
