If you thought a game-winning kick at the Caesars Superdome would be enough to make Blake Grupe a household name, think again.
After a walk-off field goal to win the preseason opener against the Chiefs, the UDFA shared some highlights of his struggles to get through security at his home debut.
As he walked onto the field prior to the game, he explained on Twitter that he was questioned for not having credentials. It's hard for anyone to blame security for not assuming the 5-7, 156-pound rookie was a professional football player, but alas, he is. The former Notre Dame standout has been competing with Wil Lutz throughout the preseason and has fared well.
He handled kickoff duties throughout the game, but his first live field goal opportunity came as time expired after a stunning interception with the Chiefs in position to run the clock nearly all the way down. Instead the ball landed in the arms of defensive end Kyle Phillips. Grupe knocked the kick through from 31 yards out and the Saints won 26-24.
But after the celebration and as he was trying to go out the player exit, he got stopped by security again. They thought he was a fan.
His message: "Stay humble. Thankful," he posted. "Great team win!"
Based on early returns, Grupe should be on a first-name basis before too long. But for now, maybe keep that ID ready.
