Detillier: Saints defense couldn't have played better, but the offense stunk

The New Orleans Saints 20-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was an ugly one.

“You turn the football over five times, you ain't winning nothing at any level,” Mike Detillier, co-host of Sports Talk, told WWL's Tommy Tucker.

It was the first time since November 29, 2012 that the Saints had five turnovers in a single game, all of which came in the second half. Quarterback Jameis Winston threw three interceptions while running back Mark Ingram and wide receiver Chris Olave each had a fumble.

“The defense couldn't have played a better game,” Detillier said. “Oh my goodness, you couldn't ask them to play a better game than they did. They had them in check. Every time, check, check, check. It was three and out, three and out, three and out.

“You put your defense into some difficult situations, and they continually bailed you out,” Detillier continued. “And you could get nothing going on the offensive side of the football. There was nothing you could really hang your hat on.”

The Saints actually held a 3-0 lead for much of the game because of the stout defensive play. The Buccaneers averaged just 2.4 yards per carry while future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady completed just 52.9% of his passes for 190 yards and a lowly 79.3 passer rating. Not counting one play kneel downs at the end of each half, Tampa Bay had 11 drives. Four were three and outs, and another was a three play drive that ended in a field goal.

The New Orleans offense just could not get in a rhythm, and there were no fourth quarter heroics to spark a comeback like in Week 1 – just the opposite, in fact, with four of the five turnovers occurring in the final quarter.

The Saints will look to get back on track with a road game against the 0-2 Carolina Panthers this Sunday at noon.
