The Saints are bringing in some linebacker depth, and it comes with a familiar face.

The team is expected to sign linebacker Kiko Alonso after a tryout, according to a report from Ian Rapoport.

Alonso was a member of the Saints in the 2019 season after arriving by trade from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for Vince Biegel. Alonso saw action in 13 games that season and logged 31 tackles before suffering an ACL injury in the playoff loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

The 31-year-old was traded again during the 2020 season as part of the package that brought in Kwon Alexander from the San Francisco 49ers. He has not appeared in a game the last two seasons.

Alonso will join a top-heavy linebacker room that features Demario Davis and second-year player Pete Werner, along with Andrew Dowell, Zack Baun, Kaden Elliss, Eric Wilson, 5th-round pick D'Marco Jackson and UDFAs Nephi Sewell and Isaiah Prior.

It's unclear what corresponding move, if any, will be made to account for Alonso's signing, though he could fill the spot of Smoke Monday, who suffered a significant knee injury in practice earlier this week.
