A New Orleans homecoming has ended just two days after it started, with recently signed guard suffering an injury on Day 3 of Saints camp that is expected to end his 2023 season.
Trai Turner, who was signed earlier this week as premium offensive line depth, went down with an apparent injury during 1-on-1 drills Friday and had to be carted off the field. That injury has been deemed to be a torn quadriceps, according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter.
It's a disappointing turn of events for the New Orleans native and former LSU standout who was looking to compete in the offensive line rotation with Cesar Ruiz, Andrus Peat, Calvin Throckmorton, James Hurst and others. His injury will likely send the Saints on a new search for quality depth.
The injury marks the first major health blow of camp, which has otherwise featured a largely healthy roster. Trevor Penning missed a day of practice on Thursday with a minor foot injury, but returned for drills on Friday, the first practice open to fans. OL Lewis Kidd also missed practice on Thursday but returned on Friday. The lone absences on Friday were G Cesar Ruiz and RT Ryan Ramczyk, both of which were said to be scheduled days off as the team navigates sweltering conditions to kick off camp.
The Saints will be back in action for another open practice on Saturday before a day off, then the first day of padded practice on Monday.
