Saints release RB Jamaal Williams as salary cap purge begins

The New Orleans Saints have made the first of what will likely be several moves as they navigate back to the salary cap this offseason.

That process kicked off on Tuesday with the team terminating the contract of veteran RB Jamaal Williams. The move will clear about $1.6 million, taking a small chunk out of the $47 million overage they need to clear by the start of the new league year on March 12.

The Saints clear a majority of that space through restructures, though they could opt to get more creative with adjustments to contracts or by showing the door to other veteran players.

Williams' run with the Saints was certainly a disappointing one, with the veteran arriving in New Orleans fresh off a season that he led the NFL in rushing touchdowns, only to produce just 470 yards and two touchdowns over 27 games in black and gold. The Saints do have several pieces remaining from last year's running back room, including star Alvin Kamara. The Saints will also look again to third-year pro Kendre Miller, who has struggled to stay healthy and appeared in just 14 games over his two NFL seasons. The Saints also opted to re-sign veteran Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who joined New Orleans late in the 2024 season and had a significant role over the final few games.

New Orleans could also stand to add RB depth in the draft for Kellen Moore's new offense, a class that features another Boise State Broncos standout Ashton Jeanty as a potential option when the Saints go on the clock at No. 9 overall.
