The New Orleans Saints have added depth in the RB room this week in the form of James Robinson.
The 25-year-old was one of several players who were brought in for a workout this week and has been added to the practice squad, according to a league source. The deal had not yet officially been announced as of Wednesday morning.
The Saints also worked out RBs Jerrion Ealy, John Lovett and Ty Montgomery, according to a report from NewOrleans.Football.
The addition adds a body at a position that's been limited by injuries, with rookie Kendre Miller still out as he recovers from an ankle injury suffered in Week 9. Head coach Dennis Allen said last week that there has been no setback, but that the recovery process had "stalled." The team is also managing hand and foot injuries to Taysom Hill, who also handles a key role in the team's running game. Without those two players available, the Saints have leaned on veterans Alvin Kamara and Jamaal Williams. Another rookie in Jordan Mims is also on the practice squad.
Robinson is an intriguing name, largely due to him bursting on the scene as an undrafted rookie with the Jaguars in 2020, when he ran for 1,070 yards (4.5 YPC) and 7 TDs, while also catching 49 passes for 344 yards and another 3 TDs. He's struggled to make an impact since an Achilles injury that ended his 2021 season, and has found himself bouncing across multiple rosters.
Robinson was traded to the Jes for a 6th round pick in 2022 after an injury to Breece Hall, appearing in 4 games but only totaling 34 yards. Robinson signed a deal with the Patriots this past offseason, but was released before appearing in a game. He's also had short stints with the Giants and Packers this past season.
The Saints (6-7) are in the a three-way tie with the Bucs and Falcons for first place in the NFC South and host the Giants (5-8) in Week 15.
