The New Orleans Saints really only have one approach they can take to Alvin Kamara's ongoing court saga: Wait and see.
Head coach Dennis Allen said as much when he was asked about Kamara at the NFL's annual owners meetings.
“We’re really just kind of letting that legal process play out and we’ll adjust our plans accordingly in terms of what we’re dealing with from a legal aspect and what we’re dealing with from a league discipline aspect,” Allen said.
If it sounds like an echo, that's because it's the same general answer that was heard throughout the 2022 season regarding the incident that occurred outside of an elevator at a Las Vegas nightclub prior to that season's Pro Bowl. He and three others have been charged in the case, with Kamara's attorneys intending to argue self-defense in the incident.
That case is set to go to trial on July 31, which is likely to be right in the thick of the training camp schedule. Whether he faces legal consequences, league discipline or both, it's still a bridge the Saints intend to cross when they arrive at it.
“There’s really not a whole lot that we can do about it, so I don’t know that we spend a whole lot of night thinking about it," Allen said. "Obviously we’re aware of it and we have plans on how we’ll address it, if and when we need to.”
The Saints head coach didn't draw a direct line to Jamaal Williams, whom the Saints signed to a 3-year, $12 million deal this offseason, but he'd appear to be in line for serious run as the starter should Kamara land a multiple-game suspension.
“He’s got a physical run style, which I think is something that we can use," Allen said. "Obviously with Alvin we have a dynamic playmaker at that position, but yet I think we can use the big, physical, bruising running back and he’s certainly proved he can do that.”
