Bobby Hebert: With Derek Carr, 'shame on the Saints' if they don't win NFC South

Derek Carr hasn't really done anything yet as a member of the New Orleans Saints, but he's still achieved one important thing: He's moved the needle.

The difference from Andy Dalton to Carr is probably the difference between 2 or 3 wins, Bobby Hebert explained on SportsTalk this week. He even cut his vacation a day short to make sure he could react to the news in-studio.

The Saints and Carr agree to a 4-year, $150 million contract on Monday.

"I think right now, to me it’s not even close," Hebert said. "Who is better than the Saints in the NFC South right now? Shame on the Saints if they don’t win the NFC South next year."

It's a fair point when you consider the current list of projected starters across the division, which could obviously change this offseason if the Falcons, Panthers or Bucs decide to make a splash trade.

- Derek Carr: 142 starts, 35,222 career passing yards, 217 TDs, 99 INTs
- Sam Darnold, Panthers: 55 starts, 11,767 passing yards, 61 TDs, 55 INTs
- Desmond Ridder, Falcons: 4 starts, 708 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs
- Kyle Trask, Bucs: 0 starts, 23 career passing yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs

But that's also true in the NFC on the whole. Hebert says he'd be "extremely disappointed" if the 2023 Saints didn't win at least 9 games, but more likely 10 or 11.

“You throw out the 49ers and the Eagles, you throw them out. Everybody’s kind of all the same," Hebert said. "Look at the Vikings and how we lost that game, the Vikings won 11 games by one score. You think they’re going to do that again? Then you look at the up-and-coming Lions, we don’t know. Then you look at the Cowgirls, where they’re at. … The two top dogs are the Eagles and the 49ers, but other than that? I mean, I would say for sure right now, on paper — now you’ve got to go out there — [and things could change], but the Saints are a top-5 NFC team right now.”
